FUJIFILM X100V: MY LITTLE SECRET WEAPON...
"Is that your little one?" For those in the know, a cheeky nod to Peter Griffin and family Guy. For everyone else, let's dive into my love affair with a truly special camera.
I'm firmly in the Fuji camp. There's just something about their retro charm, the tactile feel of the controls, and oh boy, that colour science! Let's be honest, the geniuses that brought us iconic film emulsions have absolutely nailed it with the Classic Chrome and Acros modes on their digital counterparts. Fujifilm's film simulations are more than just filters; they're a distinctive creative advantage. My Fujifilm X-H2 is my trusty workhorse, the powerhouse I rely on for professional gigs and those incredible wildlife shots with the 150-600mm lens.
But when it's time to travel light, when I need a companion that won't weigh me down, my X100V is the camera I reach for. The beauty of its fixed 23mm f/2 lens is in its simplicity. No more agonizing of lens choices! That single prime, offering an effective 35mm focal length in full-frame terms, is a sweet spot for so many situations. Environmental portraits that tell a story? Check.
From capturing the intimacy of the close-up to to the grandeur of a sprawling venue, the X100V offers surprising versatility without the lens swapping dance. And street photographers? This camera is practically built for you!
Intimate details and close-ups? Nailed it.
But the X100V is more than just a stylish travel companion. While often labeled a "point and shoot", don't let that fool you into thinking it's not capable of professional-level work, including the weddings and events that make up my bread and butter. Underneath that classic exterior beats the heart of pure photographic prowess: a 26.1 MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor and the lightning-fast X-Processor 4. The resulting image quality is simply outstanding.
As I mentioned, my X-H2 is my primary tool. The 40.2 megapixel sensor gives you images that are breathtaking, its low-light performance is exceptional, and the speed of the CF express Type B card means I never miss a crucial moment. However, anyone who's photographed a wedding or event knows the whirlwind of activity. Moments unfold in a blink. Ideally, having two identical camera bodies with different lenses ready to go is the dream. But the reality is, that's not always financially feasible, and lugging two X-H2 bodies around all day can be physically demanding.
This is where my trusty X100V shines. Especially during the reception. Receptions are all about energy, the toasts, the first dances - often is less than ideal lighting conditions. My go-to solution? A Godox flash mounted directly onto my X100V. This smaller, more nimble setup allows me to capture wider scenes with beautiful fill-in flash, all while blending seamlessly with the guests. At a mere 500 grams, it's significantly lighter than many traditional DSLRs. This compactness lets me move freely, capturing candid moments without feeling like an imposing presence. Being able to navigate the venue comfortably and unobtrusively invariably leads to more natural, authentic photographs.
I'm a firm believer that "the best camera is the one you have with you when you need it. "While my X-H2 is always by my side when I'm on a professional job, I wanted to push the boundaries of what I could achieve with a smaller "point and shoot" system. Could I still deliver professional-quality images that would leave my clients thrilled? the resounding answer is YES. While the fantastic X100V has now been replaced by the equally impressive X100VI, I wholeheartedly recommend grabbing any X100 series camera you can get your hands on. You'll rediscover the pure joy of taking photos. You'll have a compact yet powerful system that you can effortlessly take anywhere. And most importantly, you'll have no more excuses for missing out on capturing life's incredible moments.
See you soon from behind my lens...
